While Ang Pau is traditionally given as a gesture of goodwill and to share in the joy of the occasion, a Malaysian couple’s decision to demand a minimum of RM250 as an Ang Pau from guests attending their wedding dinner has sparked outrage online.

Couple demands RM250 Ang Pau per pax
In a now-deleted Facebook post, the couple included an Ang Pau within their wedding invitation cards that each guest received. However, unlike traditional gifts that are given voluntarily, the Ang Pau the couple provided contained a printed message that specified a minimum amount of RM250 that each guest was required to give at the wedding dinner.

It further stated that guests have the option to transfer the Ang Pau amount via bank or e-wallet and provide a transaction receipt within the Ang Pau for ‘verification purposes’.
Sparks outrage online
The couple’s demands have been met with criticism from Malaysians, who have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with what they see as a blatant act of greed.

Some have called out the couple for disregarding the spirit of gift-giving and using their wedding as a means to make a profit.

Others have argued that guests should not be forced to provide a specific amount and should be allowed to give whatever they feel comfortable with.

The incident has raised questions about the cultural significance of Ang Pau in Malaysian society and highlighted the potential for such gestures to be misused and abused for financial gain.
