The Malaysian Muslim Consumers Association (PPIM) is demanding answers over the usage of the word “gay” on the packaging of a renowned ice-cream product.
Chief Activist Datuk Nadzim Johan said that the company should be more sensitive towards certain words that may cause misunderstandings or disputes between racial groups.
He added that other words could be used to portray the joy of enjoying ice cream.
“I hope the company will provide an explanation as we are worried that children will consume this product.
“In this multiracial society, special attention is needed before using certain words or carrying out actions for marketing purposes.
“If there is no reasonable explanation, appropriate measures must be taken because this involves the purity of Islam,” he explained.
Netizens accused the company of encouraging and supporting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community by plastering the word “gay” on its packaging.
According to a quick check by local media, the controversial packaging was found at a supermarket in Kuala Lumpur, where it had the phrase ‘Golden Gaytime’ and ‘Delicious Chances To Have A Gay Time!’ printed on it.
This isn’t the first time the company has faced backlash over its questionable packaging. In 2018, Indonesia voiced strong opposition against its products, and a petition was launched in Australia calling for the change of its “offensive” name in March of this year.
