From the start of the first MCO, we have seen an uptick of Malaysians becoming food delivery riders to make ends meet.
Along the way, several riders have inspired many with their incredible stories of determination and grit like Fauzan, who made his way into a Big Four auditing firm after years of toiling.
Recently, a man named Mohd Akmal took to Facebook to share his excitement in receiving his Doctorate (PhD) in Pharmaceutical Technology from Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) while working as a Foodpanda rider.
Four years of blood, sweat, and tears
In his post, Akmal expressed that his gratitude to God and his family who assisted him throughout his PhD journey at Universiti Malaya Pahang (UMP).
[There were] many ‘thorns’ and ‘mines’ that I had to endure. My wife even got pregnant twice!”
He also proudly posted photos of his PhD thesis titled “Product Development and Evaluation of Probiotic Tablet from Locally Isolated Yeast Saccharomyces Boulardii for Stomach Acid Tolerance”.
Akmal went on to thank his supervisor Professor Mimi Sakinah, parents and wife for their continuous support, which enabled him to finish his studies successfully.
Study hard, work harder
WeirdKaya reached out to Akmal for comments but has yet to receive any response at press time.
However, Kosmo! reported that he started working as a food delivery man almost a year ago.
I would usually work in the morning and complete my thesis in the evening. I would also take leave if I need to attend lectures.”
He also told the Malay daily that he found it difficult to divide his time and energy between work and studies.
“Working as a Foodpanda delivery rider was my main source of income. Hence, I had to put in more effort in achieving balance.”
Akmal: Task completed!
Akmal’s post received over 5,500 reactions and 500 comments with netizens congratulating him for completing his studies.
All the best to you, Dr. Akmal!
