On Monday (June 1), a family of four were killed in a five-vehicle crash near the Simpang Renggam Prison in Johor after a pair of brothers allegedly raced with each other while behind the wheel.
While one of the drivers has since been arrested, it has left little solace for the victims’ family, who are still reeling with grief from the loss of their loved ones.
Recalled final moments
In an interview with NST, Nurul Ain Mohd Rashid, the mother of Nur Airish Syifa Sidek, who was the youngest victim in the crash, said the latter kissed her cheeks several times and gave a smile before leaving for Johor.

She shook hands with me and kissed my cheeks several times while smiling and said, ‘Goodbye Umi’.
“Those were her last words before leaving for Johor. She even took five of my shirts with her to wear there,” she added.
Nurul Ain also revealed that her 15-year-old son had wanted to go for the trip as well, but she stopped him as she wanted him to stay at home with her.
“Airish took five of my shirts as we both wear the same size, and she was wearing one of them when she died in the crash, which made it more heartbreaking.

Premonition
Nurul Ain said the last message she received from Airish was simply the word “Umi” while the 10-year-old was at her grandaunt’s shop in Umbai, Melaka.
“When I asked whether she was eating, she did not reply. Then, around 1.30pm, I was informed of the accident.
“Me and my husband then rushed to Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajah Kalsom in Kluang and arrived at around 11pm. Aside from my daughter, I also lost my brother, sister-in-law, and mother-in-law.”

Nurul Ain, who is currently five months pregnant and due to give birth in November, shared that Airish was overjoyed when she knew of the pregnancy.
When she found out I was pregnant, she told me not to buy any baby clothes yet because she wanted to choose them herself.
“So when I went to the shopping centre with my husband a few days ago, I did not buy any baby clothes because I remembered her request,” she said.
Airish and the three other family members were laid to rest at the Bandar Al Muktaffi Billah Shah Muslim Cemetery yesterday (June 2).
