A 19-year-old Mercedes-Benz driver has been arrested after a five-vehicle crash in Kluang, Johor, killed five people, including a 10-year-old girl.
The crash happened at around 1:15pm yesterday (June 1) at KM27 along Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam.
According to Kluang district police chief ACP Bahrin Mohd Noh, the crash involved a BMW 530e, a Toyota Vios, a Perodua Alza, a Proton Wira and another Mercedes-Benz.
The BMW 530e was driven by a 22-year-old local man who was allegedly driving recklessly at high speed with a Mercedes-Benz A250 driven by a 19-year-old local man, who police said is the BMW driver’s younger brother.
BMW allegedly lost control and entered opposite lane
Police said initial investigations found that the BMW 530e was travelling from Kluang towards Simpang Renggam before the crash.
Upon reaching the scene, the BMW allegedly lost control, entered the opposite lane and crashed into four vehicles coming from the opposite direction.
After the collision, the BMW fell into a ravine by the opposite side of the road.
The crash killed all four people in the Toyota Vios, which were the 36-year-old male driver, his 33-year-old wife, a 73-year-old female family member and a 10-year-old girl.
Police said all four died at the scene due to severe injuries to the head and body.
The BMW driver also died while on the way to hospital, bringing the total death toll to five.
Meanwhile, two passengers in the Perodua Alza, an 11-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl, suffered head injuries and were treated in the red zone of the emergency ward.
The 43-year-old Perodua Alza driver suffered injuries to his leg, while the 22-year-old Proton Wira driver was injured in the mouth.
A 57-year-old woman who was driving the other Mercedes-Benz suffered minor injuries, while her two passengers were not injured.

Police later arrested the 19-year-old Mercedes-Benz A250 driver to assist investigations. His vehicle was also seized.
Urine test came back negative for drugs.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 42(1) of the same Act.
Police also urged anyone with information about the crash to contact the nearest police station or the Kluang district police headquarters.
