Unless you’ve been living under a rock or lost Internet connection, the talk of town right now is the viral clip which showed a female passenger losing her marbles onboard an AirAsia flight.
The reason? All because an air steward didn’t speak her mother language and she saw it as a form of disrespect.

Beyond the memes and viral clip, the incident has also raised debate over whether cabin crew should learn certain languages, especially if they’re looking to do business with a specific ethnic group.
What both sides say
According to China Press, the clip sparked a lively discussion on Weibo, where netizens debated whether it was right of the air steward to speak only in English to the woman.
From the perspective of the woman’s supporters, they felt cabin crew are obliged to be fluent in Mandarin so that they can serve Chinese passengers.

Among the comments included ‘If you’re doing business with Chinese people, you should speak Mandarin’, and ‘Why even operate international flights if you can’t even speak Mandarin?’
On the other hand, some say the woman’s supporters were focusing on the wrong issue and should instead call her out for disturbing other passengers by talking loudly on the phone.
Malaysians also opposed the idea, saying that it would be unreasonable to expect business people to learn every language possible, let alone the cabin crew.

Another bluntly pointed out that boarding a plane had nothing to do with doing business with anyone.
