In a court hearing on Wednesday (May 17), a shop assistant was fined RM5,000, with a default sentence of eight months in jail, by the Magistrate’s Court in Taiping.

Muhammad Fitri Ishak, aged 26, employed at a coconut milk store, pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing pornographic materials on his mobile phone before Magistrate Nur Atiqah Sapari, The Star reports.
The accused was found in possession of 67 pornographic images and 55 lewd videos on his phone, which were discovered at Hospital Taiping on February 16 last year at approximately 12:15 p.m.
Pleads guilty for offence
The charges brought against him were under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum prison sentence of three years, a fine, or both.

During the mitigation phase, Muhammad Fitri’s lawyer, Ng Wei Jun, representing the National Legal Aid Foundation, emphasized that the accused had familial responsibilities, caring for both parents and a younger sibling, and had a monthly income of only RM1,200.

Furthermore, he assured the court that his client would not repeat the offense.
Siti Hajar Sulaiman, the prosecution officer from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence. The MCMC had arrested the accused following a report they received.
Muhammad Fitri promptly paid the imposed fine.
