On Monday (July 20), Malaysian fans of the Spanish football club celebrated its historic victory at the World Cup final, which saw Spain defeating Argentina and lifting the cup after 16 long years.
Unfortunately for fans of Argentina, they were left feeling bitterly disappointed, with one deciding to take out his frustration by following through with his threat of divorce.
Divorced wife over World Cup loss
According to Berita Harian, the viral incident came to light in a Threads post by @Raudhah.24, who claimed that a man told his wife that he’d divorce her if Argentina lost the match, leaving her distraught.

Unfortunately for her, the threat became a horrifying reality when Argentina lost to Spain, leading her husband to subsequently divorce her by pronouncing talak tiga (irrevocable divorce).
The move attracted widespread criticism from netizens, who slammed the man for throwing his marriage away over a single football match.
Former Federal Territories mufti’s take
Commenting on the issue, former Federal Territories mufti Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri urged the couple to seek confirmation from the Syariah Court or relevant religious authorities.
He explained that the majority view among major Islamic jurisprudence schools is that a conditional divorce is only valid when a specified condition is fulfilled.

Based on the majority view, when someone utters, ‘If Argentina loses, my wife is divorced by talak tiga’, and that condition occurs, then the talak takes effect according to the majority of scholars.”
Zulkifli reminded Muslims to be careful with their words, adding that remarks made in a joking manner can lead to serious consequences.
He also cited a hadith stating the three matters which are considered serious whether done in earnest or in jest: marriage, divorce, and reconciliation (rujuk).
