The University of Malaya Civil Engineering Competition (UMCEC) 2021: Geo-Challenge is an annual event organised by the Department of Civil Engineering since 2017 and endorsed by the Institution of Civil Engineers Student Chapter (UMICESC) and Civil and Environmental Engineering Club (CEEC).
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was cancelled last year. Fortunately, the committee has found a way to hold the event while embracing the new normal with online platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Mozilla Hub.
Only at UMCEC
Striving to equip students with the ability to apply critical thinking in identifying, formulating, and solving civil engineering problems while promoting the art and science of civil engineering and the Learning Beyond Classrooms concept, the geotechnical aspect will be the theme of UMCEC 2021 – a unique divergence from previous themes such as building structure and material.
To give participants a first-hand experience of Geotechnical Engineering, they will be studying the 1993 Highland Tower tragedy, allowing them to integrate real-world problems. Furthermore, participants will be able to interact and participate in the exhibition virtually via Mozilla Hub.
What are you waiting for?
This competition is open to all Diploma, Polytechnic and Undergraduate students from all public and private higher learning institutions studying Civil Engineering, Geology, Architectural Design, and Building Management.
Participants will be tasked with analysing the geotechnical aspects of slopes, propose solutions and improvements, and present their findings on June 5, 2021 (Saturday) at Microsoft Teams and Mozilla Hub to a panel of professional judges. They will also be in the running to win the prize pool worth RM3100. Apart from the cash prize, there will also be honourable mentions, the Best Poster Award, and the Best Popularity Award.
Wait no more! Each slot only costs RM50 with a maximum of 5 members in a team. The registration deadline is April 11 so be sure to sign up now at https://forms.gle/nkt1udgKRAskftMv9.
