Teresa Kok Jokingly Suggests M’sian Gov’t To Promote ‘Flood Travel Package’ As KL Floods Every Year

Climate change.
DAP Member of Parliament for Seputeh, Teresa Kok, has questioned the government’s inability to mitigate flash floods in the city, criticizing the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and other related authorities for their lack of preventive measures.

High-density housing near flood retention ponds

During the Parliament debate on the Budget 2025 yesterday (23 Oct), Kok urged the government to stop approving high-density housing developments near flood retention ponds.

Highlighting the repeated floods caused by heavy rains, she sarcastically suggested the government consider launching a “flood travel package” where tourists could tour the city by boat.

KL suffers from flash floods so frequently, yet DBKL still hasn’t learned its lesson. The heavy rainfall on Monday morning (Oct 14) should serve as a wake-up call.

With overwhelmed drainage systems, major roads leading to Parliament were blocked, forcing many MPs to arrive late, and the session had to be delayed by 30 minutes,” said Kok.

Growing concerns about climate change

She expressed her disappointment at the government’s approval of multiple high-density projects, despite growing concerns about climate change from both governmental and non-governmental organizations.

“These developments are hindering efforts to prevent floods in the city,” she said.

Kok also warned that Malaysia will assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, followed by the Visit Malaysia Year in 2026.

If KL’s flood problem persists with every downpour, it will damage Malaysia’s image in the eyes of international media, foreign investors, and tourists. Or should we launch a ‘Flood Package’ to let tourists take a boat and tour around KL?” she added.
