Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak has yet to settle nearly RM1.7 billion in unpaid taxes, according to the Finance Ministry.
In a Parliamentary written reply to RSN Rayer (Pakatan Harapan-Jelutong), who inquired if Najib had cleared his RM1.7 billion income tax arrears owed to the IRB, the ministry said that the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) has taken appropriate action, but the matter remains unresolved.
On October 16, 2023, the Federal Court upheld a ruling that Najib must settle RM1.69 billion in unpaid taxes, dismissing his appeal against the High Court’s decision.
The IRB initially filed the suit against Najib on June 25, 2019, seeking payment of the unpaid taxes, along with interest at 5% per annum from the date of judgment, as well as costs and other relief deemed appropriate by the court.
In July 2020, the High Court approved the IRB’s application for a summary judgment against Najib, enabling the recovery of RM1.69 billion in taxes for the period between 2011 and 2017.
