A Malaysian was taken aback after finding jars of Chinese New Year (CNY) cookies displayed for sale at a restaurant near Sentul, weeks before the Christmas season even begins.
Cheong, a WeirdKaya reader, discovered the festive treats during a visit to the restaurant in early November.
I was shocked because I didn’t expect to see this in November when CNY is still months away,” he told WeirdKaya.
The photo, provided by Cheong, shows rows of neatly stacked jars of cookies, including popular CNY treats like pineapple tarts and peanut cookies, prominently displayed on the counter.
This raised questions about the increasingly early appearance of holiday goods in stores and eateries.
While some shoppers might appreciate the early preparation, many feel it diminishes the excitement of the festive season by blending celebrations together.
“It’s still too early for CNY items! We haven’t even started celebrating Christmas,” one commented.
This isn’t the first time retailers and restaurants have been criticized for jumping the gun on seasonal sales. Businesses, however, argue that earlier displays allow customers more time to plan and prepare for celebrations.
