A woman was left questioning whether she had been too selfish in expressing discomfort and opposition to having her father-in-law live in the same house.
This comes after her husband suggested that they annul the marriage following her refusal to have the elderly man share the same space with them.
Who’s the selfish one?
In a Threads post, the woman wrote that her father-in-law had been pressuring her and her husband to buy a house as he didn’t want to live in a rental unit anymore.
She added that she had been married for three years and had no children. She also said that she was adamant to not have her father-in-law stay under the same roof.
Am I selfish for saying no and expressing discomfort over his request? I feel like my father-in-law’s the selfish one and lacks common sense.”
‘Let’s get divorced’
When the woman told her husband about not wanting his father to stay with them, he said that he wanted to take care of his father due to his old age.
“I then told him I’d rather live alone than have to live with my father-in-law and take care of two men at once, leading him to suggest that we get divorced.
“Is it normal that I’d rather get divorced than live with my father-in-law? Besides, I’m already tired of living with this manchild,” she lamented.
The woman also said that if her husband insisted on getting a divorce and prioritises his father over her, she will not stop him.
Reactions
A handful of netizens were on the woman’s side and comforted her by saying that she wasn’t in the wrong in standing up to her father-in-law’s selfish request.
They also encouraged her to leave her husband for good so that her mental health will not be affected by the toxic situation.
