‘I’m Not A Rich Guy!’ — M’sian Man Says GF’s Dad Demanded RM50,000 Bride Price If He Wants To Marry Her

'I don't think he likes me at all," the OP remarked.
A man was left wondering whether he’d ever win both his girlfriend’s hand in marriage and her father’s favour following a string of events which soured the older man’s perception of him.

He took to social media to air his grievances about how his girlfriend’s father not only looked down on him, but also made disparaging remarks about him in public.

First impression ruined

In the post, the man, who’s 31, wrote that he and his girlfriend had enjoyed a loving relationship for four years, with only one person seemingly standing in their way of marriage — her dad.

He said the first time he went to see her parents, his car suffered a flat tyre while they were travelling from KL to Seremban, forcing him to spend a long time fixing it.

As a result, they both turned up late to the restaurant by an hour, which left his girlfriend’s dad deeply displeased, so much to the point where he barely spoke to the OP.

The OP also claimed that his girlfriend later told him that her dad had deemed him to be an “unreliable” man as he failed to turn up at the restaurant on time.

From there, it would set off a chain of events which saw the older man disliking the OP even more as time passed.

Wanted RM50,000 bride price

In a bid to be in the good graces of his girlfriend’s dad, the OP said he would help run all sort of errands or buy gifts for the former’s birthday. Unfortunately, none of it seemed to soften the older man’s attitude towards him.

Things came to a boiling point when the topic of marriage was brought up, which saw the girl’s father demanding that the OP pay a bride price worth RM50,000 or not marry his daughter at all.

At first, I thought I heard him wrongly. Even my girlfriend was stunned. My family isn’t wealthy and I’ve always relied on myself as my parents are working too.

“I strongly believe the bride price isn’t the issue. The real issue is that he doesn’t want me to marry his daughter because he would find something to criticise me whenever marriage is mentioned.”

The OP also said he was particularly hurt by a remark made by his girlfriend’s dad, who said that if he couldn’t come up with the RM50,000 bride price, he “shouldn’t be in a hurry to get married.”

“I’ve been working hard all these years and it’s not that I don’t want to give her a good life. Problem is, I can’t be rich overnight. Now I’m starting to wonder whether am I really not good enough,” he lamented.

Reactions

In the comment section, a handful of netizens felt it was best for the couple to go their separate ways, with one saying it was better to remain single while one’s not financially capable for marriage.
