Securing a job at a multinational company with a salary of nearly RM5,000 may sound like an ideal start for a fresh graduate.
However, one Malaysian woman said the experience has left her crying almost every night and dreading the thought of going to work.
Claims she received little guidance
Sharing her experience on Threads, the woman said she had been working at the company for almost three months.
Although others told her she should be grateful for the opportunity, she claimed that she was not given enough guidance at work.
Whenever she asked questions, she felt that her colleagues viewed her as incompetent. However, if she did not ask and made a mistake, she would also be blamed.
She claimed that she was often told, “You already have a degree, figure it out yourself.”
Instead of receiving guidance when she needed help, she said she was labelled “weak”.
Felt excluded by her colleagues
The woman said the work itself was not the most painful part of her experience. What affected her most was feeling excluded by her colleagues.
According to her, her colleagues would eat together as a group but often left her out, despite her attempts to greet them, start conversations and socialise.
She also claimed that most of their conversations and meetings were conducted in Mandarin, which she could not understand.
As a result, she often had no choice but to remain silent while discussions took place around her.
Her workload also continued to increase, leaving her to work late without being able to claim overtime pay.
There were also days when she allegedly had to skip lunch because she had too many deadlines to meet.
Unable to quit without another job
Anticipating suggestions that she should resign, the woman explained that leaving was not an easy option.
She said her father had passed away and she still had four younger siblings who were studying.
As one of her family’s main breadwinners, she could not afford to leave without first securing another job, especially when employment opportunities were difficult to find.
She added that she was not asking for special treatment.
I just want an opportunity to learn. I want to be guided, given room to learn from my mistakes and treated with respect as a human being.”
The fresh graduate then asked whether others had gone through similar experiences and how they managed to cope.
