A university student has expressed frustration over her family’s spending habits, claiming that her parents continue to take on expensive commitments despite frequently saying they have little money.
In a viral Threads post, the student said her father works in a factory and earns a basic salary of RM2,500.
She is currently pursuing a degree, while her younger sister recently completed SPM and her brother is still in primary school.
Bought new car after completing previous loan
According to the student, her family recently finished paying off a car loan of more than RM800 per month after nine years.
However, her mother allegedly decided to buy another car shortly afterwards, with the new loan costing RM997 per month for another nine years.
The student said she was the only person in the family who did not feel excited about the new car.
Having watched her family struggle with the previous loan, she questioned why they would commit themselves to an even higher monthly payment.
She added that her father has since complained to her about not having enough money and was reportedly surprised when the new car’s road tax cost RM1,300.
Mum allegedly spent over RM750 on perfume
The student also recalled an incident where her father said the family had less money that month because he needed to pay over RM1,000 for road tax.
Her mother allegedly reminded everyone to spend less, but bought a perfume costing more than RM600 the following day.
The student claimed her mother also paid RM150 to have it engraved.
She further alleged that her mother purchased an iPhone 17 Pro Max on a two year instalment plan, while her father uses an Oppo phone costing around RM300.
Children have been working since school
The student said she has been earning her own money since secondary school because of her family’s debts.
Her younger sister, who recently completed SPM, is also allegedly pressured to work and help purchase household necessities.
She claimed that her parents frequently tell the siblings that they should help buy groceries once they begin working.
The student also said her family rarely goes on holidays and that the children pay for their own meals whenever they eat outside.
Despite this, she claimed her mother often tells her that she will be responsible for supporting both parents once she is older.
‘B40 parents who want a T20 lifestyle’
The student recalled using her mother’s money to pay her RM800 tuition fee during the first semester of her diploma.
She alleged that her mother continues to bring up the payment until today.
According to her, the family also does not subscribe to Astro or home WiFi because her parents claim they cannot afford them.
Describing her parents as a B40 family that wants a T20 lifestyle, the student said she was disappointed by their financial decisions.
She ended the thread by saying that if she becomes successful one day, she does not intend to give her parents any money.
