Back in July, Malaysians were outraged and horrified after a viral clip showed a man mercilessly beating a Husky until it collapsed to the ground.
Following the incident, netizens called for the man to be arrested and punished severely for his cruel act towards the dog, which was left “extremely traumatised and mentally broken” by the abuse.
M’sian badminton player fined RM25K for beating Husky
According to an Instagram post by animal rights group MyForeverDoggo, it wrote that the perpetrator was national badminton player Samuel Lee.
He pleaded guilty to charges of animal abuse under Section 29(1)(A) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015, which carries a fine of up to RM100,000, a maximum prison sentence of three years, or both, upon conviction.
During the hearing, the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) called for the court to mete out a heavy punishment for Lee, given the fact that he was a professional badminton player and should be a good example to the younger generation.
In response, Lee’s lawyer said that the husky named Kitster was adopted by Lee from its previous owner who didn’t take good care of it.
He also argued that since it came under Lee’s care, Kitster saw improvements in his physical wellbeing, adding that the dog is afraid of strangers and would appear afraid and traumatised, especially when he was taken by DVS officers.
In the end, the judge imposed a RM25,000 fine on Lee in default of six months in jail. She also added that Lee should know better than to abuse animals given his level of education and hoped he won’t repeat the mistake again.
Husky handed over to Animal Welfare Dept
As for Kitster, he wasn’t returned back to Lee and was instead handed over to the Animal Welfare Department.
This was done to facilitate the adoption process by a “keen and qualified adopter”.
