McDonald’s Malaysia has taken legal steps against a pro-Palestine organization, BDS Malaysia, alleging defamation linked to a boycott campaign.
The fast-food giant stated on Friday (29 Dec), emphasizing its neutral position on the Gaza conflict and its humanitarian efforts.
“While we understand and respect that the act of boycotting is an individual decision, we believe that it should be based on true facts and not false allegations,” the company reportedly said.
McDonald’s Malaysia also highlighted its RM1 million donation to the Palestinian Humanitarian Fund, asserting its commitment to peace in Gaza.
Local NGO sued for defamation
According to a statement released by BDS Malaysia, the organization recently received a writ of summon from the fast-food chain and they ‘categorically’ denied the accusations made by them.
“McDonald’s Malaysia is suing BDS Malaysia. They claim their business has suffered lately and are blaming us.”
“We have therefore decided to let the court decide on the matter,” it wrote.
The NGO also mentioned that they have engaged with a legal firm and will release more details after consulting with the firm.
What happened?
McDonald’s in Malaysia is facing a boycott due to its alleged links to Israel, particularly in response to the Israeli invasion of Gaza.
This boycott is part of a broader movement targeting major international brands with perceived pro-Israel stances.
McDonald’s Malaysia, operated by Gerbang Alaf Restaurants Sdn Bhd, has faced significant revenue loss and even had to lay off employees as a result of this boycott.
However, it also emphasized it operates independently and does not reflect the values or practices of McDonald’s Israel.
McDonald’s Malaysia emphasized once again that they do not direct any sales, profits, royalties, or franchise fees from restaurant operations to endorse or contribute to any political cause or conflict worldwide.
