What was supposed to be a normal court proceeding quickly took a paranormal turn after ex-politician Lau Seck Yan said her dead husband wanted to ‘speak’ through her and declare her innocence.
The chilling encounter took place at the Seremban High Court yesterday (Apr 19), where Lau was facing charges for stabbing her husband Poh Seng Hiap on Jan 28, 2022.
‘It’s not murder but fate’
As the former Port Dickson 2018 by-election candidate was brought before Judge Rohani Ismail, Lau informed the court that her deceased husband was present and wished to “speak” through her with her body acting as the vessel, reported The Star.
I, Lau Seck Yan, have been accused of murdering Poh Seng Hiap. As his wife, Poh Seng Giap would hereby wish to explain that I (he) was not murdered. It was ajal (death was fated). Mr Poh was not murdered.
Judge Rohani then told Lau that her trial has yet to begin as the court was waiting for testimonies from witnesses and reminded her not to make any remarks about the case.
Despite the judge’s reassurance that she would eventually get her day in court, Lau continued to maintain her innocence while claiming to “channel her husband’s spirit”, reported FMT.
“Poh Seng Hiap was not murdered, it was ‘ajal’. Poh Seng Hiap is speaking. You have to understand that my wife did not kill me. I am Poh Seng Hiap here. Why don’t you listen to me that my wife did not kill me. I was fated to die,” she said.
While everyone was unnerved by the unusual sight, it was reported that Lau’s daughter, who was also present in court, maintained a calm demeanor throughout.
Pleaded for fairness
When Judge Rohani set Mar 3 to 7 and Mar 17 to 21 for the trial, she was interrupted by Lau again, who urged her to be fair.
“You have to be fair to us, please. Poh was not murdered, it was ‘ajal’,” she said, before wishing the judge “Selamat Hari Raya, maaf zahir dan batin“.
In response, Judge Rohani said that she always did her best to be fair to everyone, adding that she had a hectic schedule and the dates set were the only ones available.
Lau was charged with Poh’s murder last January at the Magistrates’ Court, where she was accused of stabbing him in the chest and waist at their home, where two of their daughters were witnesses to the event.
However, she has maintained her innocence, saying that she was the “victim” in the matter.
