JOHOR BAHRU – Johoreans should remember that the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government was considered the best worldwide in handling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, says Bersatu Supreme Council member Azmin Ali.
He made the bold claim during a Chinese New Year dinner with representatives of Johor’s small-and-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) last Sunday (Feb 6).
Within a short period, the country was facing a health and economic crisis, but under the leadership of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, PN successfully brought the country out of this crisis.
He also quoted the Nikkei COVID-19 Recovery Index as proof, where Malaysia was ranked 13th compared to 115th last year.
“We have to continue this success and I leave it to the people to decide in the Johor state elections,” he said.
Najib: ‘Stop deluding yourself’
Azmin’s claim was later criticised by ex-prime minister Najib Razak, who advised the former to look into the numbers before making such a statement.
‘During that period, figures showed that Malaysia was the worst country in Asean, besides being among the worst in the world. We were the world champions of Covid-19 at that time,” he wrote in a Facebook post today.
Najib also said that Malaysia was the only country to suspend Parliament and declare a national emergency as part of its strategy to combat the pandemic as well as losing its prized A grade standing.
“He probably forgot how the people suffered under PN rule, where countless lives were lost through suicide and hoisted white flags for assistance.”
