“Netizens Always Scold Me First When There’s A Problem With Public Transport”, Says Anthony Loke

However, he sees it as a challenge to further improve services.
It’s no easy job for Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who has been the subject of both praise and criticism ever since he took on the position.

Unfortunately, it seems that he’s been facing more heat than he expected, so much so that he himself has expressed a sense of resignation towards the public sentiment.

‘Always the first to get scolded’

Speaking to reporters yesterday, Loke said that he was often the first in line to get criticised by netizens whenever there was a problem with public transport in Malaysia.

Many wouldn’t say thank you if there are no issues as they think that’s how it should be. But as soon as there’s a breakdown or delay, my Facebook would be flooded with harsh remarks from netizens.

“But I hope everyone will be as patient as I am because I’m the first to receive these comments as many follow me on Facebook. So if a problem arises, they would come after me,” he said as quoted by China Press.

Despite the backlash that he faces on a daily basis, Loke said that he views it as a challenge to further improve public transport services.

On a separate matter, Loke revealed that 836 staff resigned from Prasarana in 2022 alone and that the turnover rate among Rapid Rail and Rapid Bus personnel were 5% and 11% respectively.

“This is a worrying sign and our research showed that a majority of them are engineers and bus drivers who were lured to other countries with a better pay.

“In order to face this challenge head on, Prasarana and the government has the responsibility to to maintain a competitive pay and optimal benefits for workers,” he said.

Netizens react to Loke’s remarks

On social media, netizens gave their thoughts about Loke’s remarks about being the first to be in line to receive criticism from the public.

One wrote: “If you’re a person with a sense of responsibility, (getting criticised) is for sure.”

Another commented: “To be honest, if it were your predecessor in charge, we as netizens would have slammed him even harder.”

Another encouraged Loke to carry on and keep up the good work, quoting the famous line from Spider-Man: “With great power comes great responsibility.”

Ever since taking office, Loke has conducted frequent spot-checks on various public transport while undercover and introduced sweeping changes as well.

Unsurprisingly, his efforts have earned him a spot in the ‘Best Performing Ministers’ list, where he scored an approval rating of 49%:
