A simple act of kindness in Taiping recently touched many after a local councillor helped an elderly man who was prepared to cycle over 7KM alone just to replace his damaged MyKad.
According to a report by Oriental Daily, the 78-year-old man, who lives alone in Pokok Assam, had visited the DAP Pokok Assam service centre seeking help regarding his damaged IC.
Wanted to cycle there by himself
Speaking to Oriental Daily, Taiping councillor Ng Leong Wei said the uncle had brought along a badly damaged MyKad and asked whether it could still be replaced.
After checking the card, Ng realised the damage was already serious and advised the uncle to replace it soon.
The elderly man then asked where the National Registration Department (JPN) office was located.
When Ng casually asked how he planned to get there, the uncle calmly replied that he would cycle there himself.
He told me he wanted to cycle there on his own,” Ng said.

Councillor worried about uncle’s safety
Ng shared that the journey to the JPN office is more than 7KM and involves heavy traffic along Jalan Kuala Kangsar, including many lorries.
He added that the new JPN office is located further inside and may be difficult for elderly people unfamiliar with the area to find.
He’s already 78 years old. I really didn’t feel comfortable letting him go there alone,” he said.
Ng then immediately offered to drive him instead.
The pair later met at the service centre before heading to the JPN office together, where the uncle successfully received his replacement MyKad in less than an hour.
Uncle offered to belanja him and pay petrol money
According to Ng, the elderly man repeatedly apologised for troubling him throughout the trip and even offered to treat him to food and drinks.
He also insisted on paying for petrol, but Ng politely declined.
Ng added that the service centre had also previously helped transport senior citizens for Covid-19 vaccination appointments free of charge.
