A violent altercation took place on Ren’er Road in Keelung City, Taiwan, leading to the tragic death of a 23-year-old Malaysian student. The police swiftly arrested three suspects, charging them with attempted murder, assault, and participating in a brawl.
The incident took place on Wednesday (Nov 15), at around 4 am.
Heated argument outside Karaoke
According to the China Times News Network and additional police reports, the Malaysian student, Chen, and his 24-year-old friend, Yan, were enjoying an evening at a KTV. After leaving the KTV, they encountered Chen, a 22-year-old Taiwanese man, along with Lin and 18-year-old Zhang. This meeting escalated into a conflict.
The police report details that the Taiwanese Chen unexpectedly attacked the Malaysian Chen and Yan with a folding knife.
The Malaysian student suffered a piercing wound to the inner thigh, causing severe bleeding, while Yan sustained a cut on his right lower leg.
Despite emergency treatment that initially stabilized the Malaysian student, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 4:30 am today (18 Nov).
Following the attack, the suspects fled the scene in a taxi.
Suspected detained by Taiwan police
However, the Zhong’er Road Police Station was promptly notified and succeeded in apprehending the three suspects within an hour and a half of the incident.
The main suspect, Chen, was detained by court order, while his accomplices Lin and Zhang were placed under residential surveillance.
It was learned that the Malaysian victim, a third-year student at the National Taiwan Ocean University, was studying Marine Environmental Information.
He worked part-time at a hot pot restaurant in Keelung City to support himself. The night of the incident, he was unwinding at the KTV with colleagues after work, an evening that tragically ended in his untimely demise.
Officials from the Keelung Police’s First Precinct visited the hospital to express their condolences and support to the victim’s family.
Parents arrived in Taiwan
The victim’s mother and sister, who had flown to Taiwan, were briefed on the case and provided resources from the Crime Victim Protection Association.
The police, along with the Foreign Affairs Division and the Youth Corps, offered comprehensive support to the family in coordination with the school and the association.
