Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) has made history by donating two retired Light Rail Transit (LRT) carriages to be submerged off the coast of Tioman Island, creating Malaysia’s first artificial LRT reef.
According to RapidKL, this initiative, recognized by the Malaysia Book of Records, aims to enhance marine biodiversity and promote sustainable tourism on the island.
The project supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water, aligning with Prasarana’s commitment to marine conservation and sustainability beyond their 2023-2030 Sustainability Action Plan launched in December 2023.
Implemented as part of Prasarana’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, the project was executed in collaboration with the Al-Sultan Abdullah Foundation (YASA).
Coaches retired in October 2023
The donated LRT carriages, which served the Kelana Jaya Line since 1998 and were retired in October 2023, were transported from the Kelana Jaya Depot to Sinar Tioman, Kuala Rompin, where they underwent professional inspections by Rapid Rail’s technical team.
The Malaysia Book of Records recognized event, titled “The First LRT Coach Reef in Malaysia,” was officiated by His Royal Highness Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah at Berjaya Tioman Resort.
The ceremony was graced by Her Royal Highness Tengku Ampuan Pahang Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah and His Royal Highness Tengku Mahkota Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah.
The reefing operation, which involved submerging the LRT carriages 18 meters underwater at the Al-Sultan Abdullah Dive Site in Tioman Island, was led by Brigadier General Tengku Panglima Raja Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah along with 60 professional divers.
