In recent weeks, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has sparked concern among Malaysians after a photo showing up with swollen eyes went viral on social media.
In the photos, Zahid’s eyes were seen to be rather puffy and swollen, leading many to speculate that he had undergone plastic surgery.
Zahid’s daughter clarifies
In response to the speculations, Zahid’s daughter Datuk Nurulhidayah Ahmad Zahid took to Instagram to clear the air about the UMNO president’s appearance.
In the post, she said that Zahid’s optical nerves were not functioning properly, causing his eyes to have a droopy look.
She also denied claims that her father went for plastic surgery, saying that there wasn’t a need for him to do so.
Why should he do (plastic surgery on) his face? He is not a superstar. He had problems with his optical nerves that was causing him harm and there was a need to address it.
“However, it’s normal for people to spread lies instead of uncovering the truth,” she wrote in the comment section.
Previously, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution announced on June 22 that Zahid would be on a two-week leave, reported FMT.
According to Nurulhidayah, she said Zahid chose not to go on a long break after the surgery as he had many government and political responsibilities to take care of.
Commenting on the matter also was UMNO member Rafi Awg Kechik, who wrote on Facebook saying that Zahid had to undergo surgery on both eyelids as excessive skin had covered up to 70% of his eyesight.
Zahid first sparked curiosity over his eyes when he was spotted donning a pair of sunglasses at several events he attended earlier. It wasn’t until he stopped wearing it did netizens begin to wonder what actually happened to his eyes.
We wish Datuk Zahid a speedy recovery from his surgery!
