In contrast, engineering careers often require years of training and offer modest starting pay, which discourages young workers from staying in the field.

Impact on national workforce

In a press conference, Nanta warned that this trend is affecting Malaysia’s engineering workforce.

At present, there are about 200,000 registered engineers, but the country needs 300,000 to meet future development needs.

This means Malaysia is short of around 100,000 engineers.

He added that the shortage could affect major projects under the Madani Economy framework, especially in infrastructure, energy and transport.

Steps to retain talent

To prevent further loss of talent, the government is reviewing ways to make engineering careers more attractive, particularly through the enhancement of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes.

I welcome the announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to expand TVET programmes, with a target of 60,000 participants.

“We are confident this initiative will help us meet the 100,000 engineer target soon,” he told Malay Mail.

Nanta also stressed that Malaysia must reduce brain drain, as engineers leaving for other industries or overseas opportunities will worsen the shortage.

He reminded that engineers are crucial to Malaysia’s progress, as they play a key role in building the nation’s infrastructure and driving technological advancement.
