Food Wars: Malaysian style

As a multicultural country, we Malaysians take pride in the wide variety of food born through the assimilation of different cultures and ethnicities.

However, as passionate as we are about food, some tend to get a little overprotective and sensitive, trading verbal barbs over the origins of a recipe and even claiming that it exclusively belongs to a certain ethnicity.

A woman named Nor Sufia Johari posted a video of her sharing her Malay-style rasam recipe, and it didn’t sit well with the Indian community, who argued that she was ‘stealing’ a dish that belonged to them dating back to the 16th century.

Angered by the comments, Nor Sufia released another video denying the accusations, saying that she never claimed the dish as Malay. She also called her critics “penumpang” (a derogatory term for non-Muslims) in a now-deleted TikTok video, further stirring the hornet’s nest.

“I never said that the rasam recipe belongs to the Malays. I said it’s a Malay rasam recipe because I’m a Malay. If I were an Indian, I would say it’s an Indian rasam recipe, and the same goes for Chinese. You get it?”

“Don’t start fights here. You are living here as a ‘penumpang‘ right? So, please stay properly and don’t make me mad!”

After facing mounting backlash over her outburst, Nor Sufia took to her Instagram account and posted a video clarifying that she did not intend to hurt or insult anyone from the Indian community.

“I am sincerely sorry for my mistake. It was not my intention to insult the Hindu religion or members of the Indian community.”
