In a recent episode of the ‘Keluar Sekejap’ podcast hosted by Khairy Jamaluddin and Shahril Hamdan, the internet was set abuzz as a video surfaced capturing a candid moment between Khairy and Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.
The clip went viral, showcasing Khairy asking the former prime minister, “Why don’t Tun (you) like me?”
‘Because you competed with my son’
The calm demeanour of Tun Mahathir as he responded caught the attention of social media users.
Dr. Mahathir’s revelation unfolded as he disclosed that his disfavour towards Khairy stemmed from a past political rivalry with his son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir.
“Because you competed with my son, your mother-in-law campaigned for you.
That’s what I was told,” explained Dr. Mahathir, pointing to Tun Jeanne Abdullah, the wife of former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Despite Khairy’s denial of the allegations involving his mother-in-law, Dr. Mahathir insisted, “That’s what I heard from the story,” concluding the exchange with a request to avoid further discussion on the matter.
Triumphed over for the position of Umno Youth leader
For context, the tension between Khairy and Mukhriz dates back to March 2009 when Khairy triumphed over Mukhriz and former Selangor Menteri Besar, Khir Toyo, in a three-cornered fight for the position of Umno Youth leader.
A month later, Abdullah, who is also Khairy’s father-in-law, resigned as prime minister, paving the way for Datuk Najib Razak to assume the role of deputy prime minister at the time.
