Malaysians are no doubt a generous and kind lot, but this behavior is sometimes criticised for only being shown towards certain groups of people that are seen to be ‘acceptable’ by society.
A local radio station’s attempt to highlight the generous nature of Malaysians backfired massively after its social experiment was accused of promoting ‘white privilege’, a term that refers to people of lighter skin getting preferential treatment based on their skin colour.
Social experiment gone wrong?
In a one-minute clip shared by Fly FM on its X (formerly Twitter) page yesterday (Mar 28), it showed one of its DJs, a Caucasian named Ryan Howlett, being sent to approach several bazaar goers as part of a social experiment to prove how kind Malaysians were.

He is then seen going up to several Malaysians, telling them that he intended to buy food for his girlfriend but left his wallet inside the car by mistake.
After explaining his predicament, Ryan asks them whether they would be willing to buy the food for him with their own money but promised to pay them back.

Without hesitation, the bazaar goers bought food and drinks for Ryan, causing him to thank them profusely.
He then pulls a surprise on them by informing them it was all part of a social experiment by Fly FM and as a reward for their kindness, he would pay for whatever they wished to order from the bazaar.

‘Nothing but white privilege’
Despite the supposed heartwarming tone, it seemed to hit all the sour notes with netizens who condemned the social experiment of glorifying white privilege.
Many of them also dared Fly FM to replicate the social experiment, but only using a dark-skinned person as its ‘test subject’.

And it seemed that the public backlash proved to be too much for Fly FM to handle as the video has since been deleted.
