“We’re Basically SEAblings” — Indonesian Content Creator Says The Philippines Feels Familiar, Malaysia Feels More Structured

SEAblings with different flavours.

A recent video by an Indonesian content creator has sparked discussion online after he shared that the Philippines feels more similar to Indonesia than Malaysia.

The clip, posted by @yudisams_, quickly gained attention, with netizens from across Southeast Asia weighing in on the comparison.

However, the creator has since clarified that his observation was based largely on visual impressions and personal experience rather than development levels.

“The physical environment felt very familiar”

In the video, he wrote:

It turns out the country that resembles Indonesia is not Malaysia, but the Philippines.”

He also captioned it:

“Philippines is the Catholic version of Indonesia.”

Speaking to WeirdKaya, he explained that the similarity he felt was mainly visual.

In my opinion, the Philippines feels more similar to Indonesia compared to Malaysia because of the physical environment and everyday atmosphere. The buildings, the roads, the roadside views, the small local stores, even the chaos on the roads and the hectic street traffic really reminded me of Indonesia.”

He added that the neighbourhood layouts, the mix of modern and older buildings, street vendors and the overall crowded, lively energy felt familiar to him as an Indonesian.

“Even the way the city feels a bit crowded and lively gave me the same energy I experience back home.”

He has also lived in Malaysia

While some commenters questioned whether he had experienced Malaysia firsthand, the creator shared that he has actually been working in Malaysia for almost a year.

According to him, one of the biggest differences lies in infrastructure and urban organisation.

In Malaysia, especially in cities like Kuala Lumpur, the roads, public transportation and buildings feel more structured and modern.”

He contrasted this with his experience in Manila.

When I was in Manila, the atmosphere felt more chaotic but also very vibrant and expressive. The street life felt intense and dynamic, which reminded me a lot of certain cities in Indonesia.”

He also pointed out historical influences as another key difference.

The Philippines reflects strong Spanish and American influences in language, religion and pop culture, while Malaysia showcases a visible mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences in daily life.

Shared roots despite differences

Despite the online debate, the creator emphasised that he believes Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines share common cultural roots.

All three countries are part of Southeast Asia. We’re basically SEAblings.”

He highlighted their shared Austronesian heritage, geographical proximity and centuries of migration and trade as factors that have shaped overlapping traditions and values.

Family-oriented values, respect for elders, hospitality and strong religious beliefs are common in Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.”

He added that while each country has its own colonial history and different levels of development, there is still a shared regional identity that connects them.

“At our core, the way we prioritise community, relationships and togetherness feels very similar across all three nations.”
