The Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) examinations, which were abolished several years ago, may be on the path to being revived again.
The announcement was made by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, who said a review into bringing back these national exams will be made soon, reported The Star.
“The national advisory council will review the matter following feedback on the abolition of UPSR and PT3.
“Any examinations under public debate will be carefully studied with input from research teams and advisory panels.
“Findings from the review will then be submitted to Cabinet for final consideration and decision,” she said during her new year’s address today.
UPSR was the first to go in 2021 and PT3 subsequently followed suit in 2022 during Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin’s tenure as Education Minister.
Following the abolishment, 413,372 candidates made history as being the first batch to not have sat for UPSR and PT3 before sitting for SPM last year.
Despite widespread worry that getting rid of the two national exam papers would adversely affect academic performance, Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh told Parliament that an analysis of the 2023 and 2024 SPM results showed that student performance remained stable.
