Renowned Malaysian influencer Nigel Ng, widely recognized as “Uncle Roger,” has announced plans to open his first restaurant in Malaysia.
Ng gained fame for his humorous and exaggerated critique of a BBC food channel host’s egg fried rice recipe, portraying the character “Uncle Roger” in a distinctive and entertaining manner that captivated audiences online.
Announcing his upcoming restaurant
In his latest video released on Monday (1 July), Ng shared a nostalgic journey featuring the late Anthony Bourdain, a celebrated chef, TV host, and author.
The video highlighted Bourdain’s exploration of Penang’s culinary scene many years ago. Ng followed Bourdain’s footsteps, showcasing the unique aspects of Malaysian cuisine to his fans.
Midway through the video, Ng surprised his audience with the announcement of his upcoming restaurant in Malaysia this year.
“More reason to visit Malaysia!”
In the video, Uncle Roger is explaining about the ingredients used in Asam Laksa and how they are very rare to be found outside of Malaysia before going into his announcement.
“See this, niece and nephew, that why if you like food, you have to travel to Uncle Roger’s country, Malaysia. Because so many ingredient we don’t export, you can’t get it outside of this country.
“And by the way, another reason to go Malaysia: Uncle Roger actually going to open my very first restaurant over there for you, coming soon later this year.” He announces in the video.
Ng’s reference to “there” unequivocally points to Malaysia, dispelling earlier rumors that “Uncle Roger” already had two restaurants in the country, specifically in SS2, Petaling Jaya, and Sunway Giza. In reality, Ng has not yet established any restaurants in Malaysia.
