For many families, a serious illness can bring not only emotional pain, but also overwhelming financial pressure.
A 15-year-old boy who is battling leukaemia has drawn attention online after Malaysian philanthropist Uncle Kentang shared the family’s difficult situation on Facebook.
According to his post, the teenager was supposed to be spending his days attending school like others his age.
Instead, he had to make his way to Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, also known as PPUM, for treatment as he fights blood cancer.
Ambulance arranged for hospital trip
Uncle Kentang said the boy’s mother did not have enough money to arrange transportation to the hospital.
His team then stepped in by sending an ambulance to bring the teenager to PPUM.
They also gave the mother some money to help with their expenses.
“Thank you, Uncle. We really have no money at all,” the mother was quoted as saying in the post.
Family allegedly had no money for food
Uncle Kentang later became concerned about whether the family had enough money to buy food while they were at PPUM.
After asking them, he claimed that they did not.
According to the post, the mother said the family was already very grateful just to have transportation to the hospital and had brought fried rice from home to eat.
The situation left Uncle Kentang saddened, especially given the boy’s young age.
“At his tender age, he should be playing. But he has to go to hospital instead to fight for his life,” he wrote.
Another hospital visit
The teenager was reportedly required to return to the hospital again on Aug 13 for further treatment.
Uncle Kentang has since appealed to members of the public who wish to help the family to reach out to him directly.
