Philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, popularly known as Uncle Kentang, is famed within Malaysian society for his works of charity for the underprivileged.
This time around, he came up with a coupon program to ensure that students from less well-to-do backgrounds don’t go hungry while attending classes.
Launched food coupon program for UTAR students
Taking to his Facebook account, Uncle Kentang said that he had recently kickstarted a coupon program that will enable needy students at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman’s (UTAR) Sg Long campus to have a meal at just RM6.
You focus on your studies, and we’ll handle your meals. For RM6 per coupon, you can enjoy a mixed rice meal or nasi lemak.”
For now, the first location where students can utilise the coupons is at a nasi lemak stall run by a woman who often went out of her way to make sure each student had enough to eat.
Another spot where the coupons can be used is at a mixed rice stall named B记, where it is run by a pastor whom Uncle Kentang praised for “treating every student like his own child”.
Uncle Kentang revealed that he plans to expand the food coupon program to UTAR’s Kampar campus, which is pending approval from its management.
He also added that three motorcycles are going to be donated to students in need from UTAR, VTAR Institute, and TARUMT, where those who need assistance are encouraged to contact him at 018-268-3999.
“The support given is like planting a durian tree. We hope that once students graduate, they can follow our example and help others in return. The durian trees we plant today will hopefully bear fruit year after year,” he wrote.
