“They Did Nothing” — Tourist Says KL Hostel Staff Ignored Her After Another Guest Sexually Harassed Her

"I was left feeling pretty dismissed and frustrated."
Solo traveling can be an incredibly enriching and exciting experience, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, particularly for women.

A female tourist recently shared a disturbing encounter during her stay at a hostel in Kuala Lumpur on Reddit, where she was sexually harassed by a male guest.

Sexually assaulted by male guest at KL hostel

According to her post, the 27-year-old woman had returned to her hostel at 2am and was confronted by a drunk man who stumbled out of another unit in the same hall,.

The man repeatedly asked her to go downtown and to a sauna with him but she rejected him flatly.

He then asked where she was from, to which she replied, “Canada”.

He then answered, ‘Belarus. Can I have a kiss?’ By now he was directly between me and the door.

“I stepped back and sternly told him ‘No. I’m going to bed now’. He grumbled something, tried to grab my arm and I pulled away,” she recounted.

Sensing that she wasn’t going to comply, the man suddenly slapped her on the buttocks and stumbled away while mumbling things that aren’t suitable to be repeated in broad daylight.

Claims no action was taken

The following morning, the woman reported the incident to the front desk of the hostel and asked if they had any male guests from Belarus.

Despite having visible cameras in the area, the staff did not take any action to assist the woman despite her clear description of the man’s features, leaving her feeling dismissed and frustrated.

“The woman I spoke to shrugged, told me to keep an eye out and maybe let them know who it was if I saw him around.

She was clearly looking for a reason to do nothing and settled on my description not being enough to identify him.

After reflecting on the incident, the Canadian tourist expressed her frustration about the lack of action taken by the hostel staff.

She added that they could have come to her aid by retrieving CCTV footage or show her the scanned passports of the man she had described to them and then kick him out of the premise or issue a warning.

“But they did none of that. I was left feeling pretty dismissed and frustrated that women have to just suck it up and deal with this crap,” she wrote.

This sure was an unfortunate experience for the woman and we hope hostels across Malaysia will do more to act on sexual harassment allegations!
