Navigation apps’ main purpose is to lead drivers on a fast but safe route to their destinations. However, there are times when things go awry along the way.
This was the case for a tour bus driver who inadvertently got the vehicle stuck underneath a flyover in Penang while following a navigation app’s directions.
Wedged underneath flyover
According to NST, the incident took place last night (Oct 31) in Taman Bagan, Butterworth.

Speaking to the English daily, the driver named Razali said he was transporting over 30 passengers from Johor to a nearby hotel before their scheduled trip to Kedah today.
He added that while it wasn’t his first time driving to Butterworth, it was his first time following the navigation app through the Taman Bagan flyover.
“The app had directed me along a route which didn’t alert me of the flyover’s height restriction.
I heard a loud bang while driving under the flyover. Moments later, the bus’ windows shattered and glass fragments scattered everywhere. I was shocked by what happened.”

Razali also cited poor lighting and unfamiliarity with the area as reasons for him having to depend on the navigation app. It was later revealed that he was using Waze for the journey.
Two passengers sustained minor injuries due to flying glass but were reported to be in a stable condition.
Based on a photo taken at the scene, there was a sign indicating the area was accident-prone and that the flyover’s height limit was 2.6m.

Glad that everyone was okay and that no fatalities were reported!
