When abroad, many Malaysians often miss the familiar taste of home, from traditional dishes to specific grocery items that perfectly cater to Malaysian palates.
However, one TikToker has revealed that getting Malaysian groceries in Western countries may be easier than many think.
M’sian groceries at Chicago mart
In a recent TikTok video, the content creator wrote, “Join me as I shop for Malaysian groceries in Chicago.”
She then introduces her viewers to Chin Land Asian Market, a Burmese grocery store in Chicago located conveniently near her workplace.

“I stopped by to pick up shallots for making sambal sotong,” she explained, sharing a slice of her Malaysian culinary life abroad.
Grew up with M’sian cuisine
The TikToker further addressed a common misconception, saying, “Everyone seems to think I don’t have access to Malaysian groceries and only eat American food. But my mom is a skilled cook, just like many Malaysian Americans here, so I grew up with Malaysian cuisine.”
The TikToker also expressed gratitude for living in a major city with a sizeable Southeast Asian community, which makes it easier to find products from Malaysia and neighboring countries.
The video highlights a variety of imported items, including Hup Seng biscuits, choki-choki chocolate sticks, honey bahulu cakes, Adabi chicken curry cans, and Milo.

Netizens’ reaction
The clip quickly gained attention on TikTok, sparking a lively discussion among local netizens who shared their own experiences and appreciation for the unique taste of Malaysian groceries abroad.

Many also curious how much does the shop charge for the groceries.
