SINGAPORE – 34-year-old Ng Aik Lep, better known as Alex, is currently seeking public assistance in raising funds for an upcoming surgery after he suffered a stroke, Lianhe Wanbaoreported.
Ng was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) on April 18 after he fainted due to enduring a feverish spell for days.
“When he was first found, his phone and wallet were missing. Hence, authorities couldn’t verify his identity.” – Give.Asia Campaign.
Going off the grid
On the day Alex was admitted to KTPH, his wife posted a tearful plea on Facebook seeking help in locating him as she was unable to contact him and was worried for his safety.
She also contacted several of Alex’s friends in Singapore, but none of them had heard from him.
A few days later, one of Alex’s friends went to the police station to file a missing person’s notice and was informed that he was at KTPH.
Thankfully, Alex regained consciousness a week later and had a video call with his family and friends. But during the conversation, they noticed that he was unable to recognize them and realised that he had lost his memory. His hearing was also impaired, and his behaviour became like that of a child’s.
Alex’s journey in Singapore
Alex has reportedly been working in Singapore for more than 12 years, while his wife and two children, aged 2 and 5, are currently residing in Malaysia.
His wife was previously working with him in Singapore but returned to Malaysia after the birth of their first child.
Sky-high medical fees
The Give.Asia crowdfunding page revealed that Alex’s current medical fees have exceeded SGD60,000 (approximately RM185.5K) and that his workman insurance only covers the maximum amount of SGD15,000
Based on his condition, his medical fees are expected to increase even more.
A campaign named “Help Alex Regain His Memory”, which was launched by Give.Asia, has received SGD62,000 (RM191K) in donations at the time of writing.
