If you’re one who’s not good with directions or are driving to an unfamiliar area, then using the Global Positioning System (GPS) is probably the best way to get to your destination.
For one woman in Thailand, the GPS turned out to be the cause of her getting stuck in the middle of a suspension bridge after she blindly followed its instructions without looking what was ahead of her.
Thai woman gets stuck in the middle of bridge
According to The Pattaya News, the unusual incident took place last Sunday (Jan 28) at around 5.40pm, where the woman’s white Honda Sedan was spotted getting stuck in the middle of the Wiang Thong Bridge.
A passerby by the name of Makun Inchan was about to cross the bridge himself when he saw the car and heard the female driver’s calls for help, prompting him to immediately call emergency responders.
The bridge, which was 120-metres long, was originally designed for pedestrian use only and not for vehicles due to its narrow surface.
The Pattaya News reported that the car had driven 15 metres onto the bridge and had its front left wheel stuck within one of the bridge’s gaps.
Thankfully, rescuers were able to retrieve the car back to safety by using two tractors and inflicted no damage to it.
‘The GPS told me to cross it’
When inquired about the incident, the unidentified female driver said she was travelling to Sung Men to visit a friend and was using the GPS as she was unfamiliar with the area.
However, she blamed the GPS for the mishap, saying that it had instructed her to cross the Wiang Thong Bridge.
I was focusing on the GPS and did not look around. I thought the bridge was sturdy and likely used by others.
“When I became stuck, I was so scared because I was in the middle of the Yom River. I was afraid the car might fall into the river, so I got out of the car to seek help,” she said.
Makun, the man who first saw the stranded car, called upon the authorities to set up warning signs so that such incidents will not happen again.
