Muar MP Syed Saddiq has raised more than RM360,000 by the second day of his 170km run from Putrajaya to Muar, far exceeding his initial fundraising target.
In an Instagram post today (July 18), Syed Saddiq revealed that the campaign had collected RM361,848.
Honestly, I’m still shocked to see this figure,” he wrote.
“This is no longer my journey alone. This is our journey together.”
Donations surged after first day
The latest figure marks a significant jump from the RM54,692 raised on the first day of his run.
It also means the campaign has exceeded its original RM200,000 target by more than RM161,000.
Syed Saddiq began the four day “gratitude run” at the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya and is expected to cover approximately 170km before reaching his constituency in Muar.
The run was organised following his acquittal in a corruption case, with Syed Saddiq saying he wanted to thank the people of Muar for supporting him throughout his six year legal battle.
Funds to support students and families
According to Syed Saddiq, the money raised will be used to create a foodbank and provide iPads to underprivileged students entering university and food baskets to families in need in Muar.
He previously said he chose the Palace of Justice as the starting point to acknowledge the judiciary’s role as the people’s final avenue for justice.
He is expected to complete the run and arrive in Muar by Sunday.
Syed Saddiq also pledged to provide RM500,000 worth of scholarships as part of his efforts to give back to the community.
With two days of running still ahead, the latest fundraising total has already surpassed his initial goal by more than 80%.
