A single mother in Johor was robbed of her hard-earned savings amounting to  RM316,803 over the course of three years by a female shaman who claimed to be able to communicate with deities.
Johor shaman introduced by friend
According to Sin Chew Daily, the woman, 40-year-old Liang Xiuling (transliteration) said that a friend introduced her to the shaman in 2019 after experiencing some personal issues within her family.

In return for giving her the answers for her problems by the deities, the shaman demanded that Liang pay up in the form of money, new clothes, incense, and alms.
“Every time I approached her for advice on my situation, the shaman would ask me for money in different ways, including a RM7,652 fee for an answer to my first question.
“She told me that if I couldn’t afford to pay it in one go, I could split the amount into separate instalments,” claimed Liang.

She also added that the shaman often threatened her of bad luck upon her family’s business and children’s wellbeing if she failed to pay.
Cheated of more than RM300,000
Afraid that the shaman’s threats would come true, Liang channeled all the money she had earned in Singapore and saved to to buy a new house in Malaysia to the shaman.
When those funds finally ran dry, Liang proceeded to take out a RM94,000 bank loan to pay the shaman and is now forced to repay RM4,000 in monthly instalments.

Upon realising that she had been scammed, Liang lodged a police report on Jan 12 along with another victim who was cheated of RM1,500 by the same shaman.
Speaking to reporters at the press conference, Simpang Renggam assemblyman Wei Zong Xian advised the public to not give money to any religious or non-profit organisations unregistered under the Registrar of Societies in Malaysia and to always ask for a receipt as proof.
