“Should Inform Earlier” – M’sian’s Car Breaks Down On The Way To Work, Boss Still Rejects WFH Request

“How are we supposed to know when a car will break down?”
For most people, car trouble is already stressful enough. But imagine breaking down on the way to work, only to have your boss still expect you to show up like nothing happened.

A Malaysian woman shared that an employee’s request for emergency leave or work from home was turned down, even after providing clear proof.

Asked for EL after car broke down

In a now viral Threads post, the woman recounted how an employee’s car suddenly broke down while they were on the way to work.

The staff then requested for emergency leave or work from home, even providing a photo showing the vehicle stranded by the roadside as evidence.

However, instead of understanding the situation, the boss reportedly rejected the request.

According to the post, the boss justified the rejection by saying the employee should have informed earlier so work arrangements could be made.

The reasoning did not sit well with the woman, saying unexpected situations like car breakdowns aren’t something one can plan in advance.

She also criticised the boss for lacking empathy, adding that it is no surprise employees may end up disliking management.

Netizens call out lack of empathy

The post quickly gained traction online, with many Malaysians sharing similar experiences of rigid workplace policies and unsympathetic bosses.

‘Same kind of boss as mine. Car broke down on the way to work. He told me to make preparations. So funny. As if you can predict when your car will break down.’

‘Most managers are like this. When staff have emergencies, that’s when their brains stop functioning.’

‘Okay then. Next time when the car is fine, quickly inform your boss what time your car is going to break down. Then you can apply WFH earlier. Apply early so it won’t be messy.’
