Bangkok is widely known for its delectable and often spicy cuisine, but it’s also home to another popular but unusual snack: fried insects.
While most would shudder at the thought of putting the fried critters into their mouths, one Singaporean TikToker loved it so much that it eventually led to her being hospitalised.
SG TikToker eats bags of fried insects in Bangkok, gets hospitalised
In the brief 29-second TikTok clip uploaded by the content creator named Nicolette Wee, it showed her strolling through a Bangkok night market on Jan 14 when she stumbled upon a stall selling fried insects.
With her curiosity piqued by the sight of the critters, Nicolette went ahead and bought a bag of grasshoppers.
As she munched on the grasshoppers, she couldn’t help but marvel at how good it tasted, where she described it as ” “thick, fat, and juicy” and had their legs “dangling out”.
She even added in the clip: “I eat until damn shiok.”
Still not satisfied with the grasshoppers, Nicolette went back to the stall for another round and bought a bag of silk worm larvae.
Like the grasshoppers, she had plenty of praise for the larvae, saying:
Damn crispy on the outside and mushy on the inside. The aunty really spammed the seasoning, so it’s damn nice.
“I was like, oh my God why my office pantry don’t have this kind of snacks,” she added.
However, Nicolette’s gastronomic experience ended on an unpleasant note when she “started sh*tting her pants” and was rushed to the hospital.
Netizens shocked
The clip garnered close to 300,000 views and netizens were left flabbergasted by Nicolette’s ‘bravery’ in eating such a huge amount of fried insects.
‘Omg I will never even attempt to risk my life for this,’ wrote one.
‘Digestive system kena culture shock,’ remarked another.
One netizen cheekily asked what was Nicolette’s official diagnosis, to which another quipped, ‘Weak character.’ Savage.
