With the Malaysian Ringgit hitting a historic low against the Singaporean dollar in recent weeks, it has encouraged an influx of visitors from over the Causeway as they spend less on food and products.
However, not all Singaporeans are tactful in showing how strong their spending power is and a fellow Singaporean has recently taken them to task for displaying this arrogant attitude in a TikTok video.
SG man tells S’poreans to be more humble when visiting M’sia
In a 2-minute video posted by SG Kaki Nang on TikTok, it showed a middle-aged Singaporean man expressing his dissatisfaction over how boastful Singaporeans are whenever they visit Malaysia.
To prove his point, he shared an anecdote where Singaporeans would always say how cheap things are in Malaysia thanks to the strength of the Singaporean dollar.
“When Singaporeans go to Malaysia to buy things, we don’t just quietly go there and buy, you know. All of us become birds.
We always say cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, cheap, right? You become jiao lang (birdmen), you know? Can you all stop being ‘birdmen’? It’s not very nice. You got to be sensitive.
The man pointed out that not only does this boastful attitude hurts the feelings of Malaysians, it also gives shop owners the ‘excuse’ to raise their prices.
He also slammed Singaporean drivers who often perform ‘CPR’ on their car after pumping petrol just to make sure every drop isn’t wasted.
‘Stop having this savior mentality’
The man then reminded Singaporeans that they were simply lucky to have won the “lottery” by being “born in the right country” and that it wasn’t a reason for them to look down on others.
“Don’t think that you’re very capable, because you just won a lottery game, okay? Because simply, you’re born in the right country. That’s all, right? People are as good as us. (It’s) just that they were born in a different country.
“Please don’t have this mindset that because you’re spending money in Malaysia, you’re helping the economy. Let’s get straight, you’re helping yourself.
Stop elevating yourself to this savior mentality: ‘I’m helping Malaysia with the economy, right?’ Go slap yourself, okay?”
