When eating out or purchasing food from hawker stalls, there’s no telling whether there will be foreign objects or worse still, potentially hazardous items inside.
A man in Singapore was left sickened after he discovered that a piece of ‘tofu’ in the vegetarian bee hoon he bought was actually a plaster with blood stains on it. Eww!
SG man bites into bloody plaster after thinking it was tofu
Speaking to Stomp about the horrifying encounter, the man said his colleague helped to buy the vegetarian bee hoon from a stall named Ru Yi Yuan Vegetarian at Bukit Batok East Avenue 4 on Feb 16.
While I was eating, I saw something resembling tofu. However, when I took a bite, it was a plaster. When I opened the plaster, there were blood stains on it.
“It’s totally disgusting and this stall is known to be famous in the area. I wonder what their hygiene standards are and question if they have been handling food properly,” he said.
Seeing that there wasn’t point to go back to the stall and show them his disgusting discovery, the man said he proceeded to lodge a report with the Singapore Food Agency (SFA).
SFA looking into incident
When contacted by Stomp, SFA said it is currently looking into the matter.
“Food safety is a joint responsibility. While SFA puts in place and enforces the regulatory measures, food operators must play their part by adhering to good food hygiene and preparation practices.
“Food operators should also ensure their premises are clean and well-maintained,” it said.
The agency also said that it took food safety seriously and will probe into allegations of lapses in food safety practices.
“As part of the enquiry and gathering of evidence, SFA may engage the feedback provider for more details and will not hesitate to take enforcement action if sufficient evidence has been obtained.”
