In Malaysia, a man is only allowed to legally marry one woman, unless he professes the Islamic faith which allows him to marry up to four wives at the same time.
Given this context, Malaysians were surprised to see photos of a non-Muslim man in Sarawak taking in two wives on social media, leaving them questioning its legality.
Sarawak man marries 2 women at the same time
In a series of photos originally shared on Facebook by a netizen named 小安娜 and later reshared by Chinese news outlet Sin Chew Daily, it showed a Chinese man in Kuching, Sarawak holding a wedding ceremony.
In the original post’s caption, 小安娜 wrote: “Congratulations to the groom and the two brides! I wish all three of you everlasting love as you grow old together.”
However, the post has since been deleted.
Based on the photos, the atmosphere was a cheery one, where the man is seen cutting the wedding cake and pouring champagne together with his two wives.
‘Is this even legal?’
Naturally, Malaysians were baffled to see the man marrying two women at the same time as he wasn’t a Muslim and wondered whether the union was permissible by law.
‘Does the law allow this?’
‘I’m very curious to see which wife’s name will be written on the marriage certificate.’
Some joked that the man was living the ultimate dream and had become the subject of envy of all men.
‘This is the dream of every man.’
‘This man is such a good ‘player’. It’s his choice and it’s fine as long as he’s happy with it. I wish him and his wives a long marriage and everlasting love.’
