Fed Up Sabahan Plants Banana Tree Inside Unfixed Pothole As A Sign Of Protest

It was later fixed after the post went viral.
Potholes are not only an unpleasant sight, but it also poses a danger to motorists as it can result in severe injuries or death when one drives over it at high speeds.

A pothole which remained unfixed in Sabah was such a public eyesore that a frustrated resident decided to plant a banana tree right inside it in an attempt to jolt the authorities into action.

The issue was first brought to light through a photo posted on Facebook by a netizen named Mahathir Aripin on Monday (Jan 29).

As seen from the photo, a banana tree was planted right into the pothole, where fresh soil was placed around the stem and roots to keep it sturdy.

According to Kosmo, the planting of the banana tree near Kampung Paris Satu located along Jalan Sandakan-Lahad Datu was a form of protest by residents and road users who were tired of the authorities’ inaction.

The Malay daily also reported that the pothole’s location was approximately 500m away from an accident which killed a 4-year-old girl recently, where a pothole was believed to be the cause.

Pothole gets fixed

It turned out that Mahathir’s post was exactly the “kick” that the authorities needed to get to work and fix the pothole.

This comes after the Department of Public Works Sabah posted an update on its Facebook page, where it showed workers finally covering up the pothole with tar.

“Please be informed that continuous rain in the area is affecting pothole patching works. However, the concessionaire is making efforts with 2 units to carry out maintenance works,” it wrote.
