Even if you’re not a heavy social media user, you’d probably heard of Salt Bae, the Turkish restauranteur who became an online sensation after a shot of him sprinkling salt became a viral meme.
Aside from being an online personality, Salt Bae, whose real name is Nusret Gökçe, is also known for his extremely pricey steaks — one which a Malaysian man found out for himself during a visit to the former’s restaurant in Dubai.
M’sian spends RM13,000 on steaks at Salt Bae’s restaurant
In a 1-minute 28-second video posted on TikTok by @daddymin89, it showed him waiting to be served by Gökçe, who was seen slicing up steak at another table.
After making his order, Gökçe approaches @daddymin89’s table and asks where he was from, leading the latter to quip that he was the “sheikh of Malaysia”.
The camera then pans to two Golden Tomahawk steaks placed on the table, a bone-in wagyu ribeye that’s encrusted in 24 karat gold leaf and is said to cost at least US$1000 (approx. RM4,400) each.
The celebrity restauranteur proceeds to sharpen his knives before slicing the steaks into smaller pieces and showering salt on the meat in the viral meme posture.
Towards the end of the meal, @daddymin89 was handed the bill and discovered that it cost him a whopping RM13,000.
Was it worth it?
The clip, which has since been viewed over 930,000 times at the time of writing, had netizens in shock and questioning the price of the steaks.
‘RM13k for the rich is like RM13 only. His savings are in the millions. Poor people like us will feel that RM13k is a lot.’
‘If I went there to eat, confirm I’ll need to go back there and wash the dishes (to earn the money back).’
When one asked @daddymin89 whether the steak’s taste was worth the price, he replied by saying that better steaks could be found elsewhere at a cheaper price, adding that Salt Bae’s restaurant was “over priced” and “just for the vibes only”.
