Drivers travelling along selected stretches of the PLUS Highway and South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE) will now see recommended minimum speed limits displayed for each lane.
The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), together with the Malaysian Highway Authority, PLUS and SKVE, began the three-month trial on Aug 1 and it will run until Oct 31.

Three highway stretches selected
The proof-of-concept trial is being carried out at three locations:
- PLUS E1 northbound from Tanjung Malim to Behrang
- PLUS E2 northbound from Bandar Ainsdale to Nilai
- SKVE E26 from the Ayer Hitam Toll Plaza to Bandar Saujana Putra
MIROS said these locations were selected based on several factors, including reports of sudden traffic congestion, no entry or exit points within the stretches and the absence of AWAS cameras.

Authorities will monitor traffic and collect data throughout the trial to determine whether the initiative is effective and suitable for wider use.
Different speed recommended for each lane
For highways with two lanes, the recommended minimum speed is 80km/h on the right lane and 60km/h on the left.
On three-lane stretches, drivers are advised to travel at least 100km/h on the right lane, 80km/h in the middle and 60km/h on the left.
For four-lane stretches, the recommended speeds are 100km/h on the right, followed by 80km/h, 60km/h and 60km/h across the remaining lanes.
Drivers should still refer to the signboards installed at each trial location.

No summons for driving below recommended speed
MIROS stressed that the minimum speeds are only recommendations and are not mandatory during the trial. Drivers will not be fined for travelling below them.
Motorists should also slow down whenever conditions are unsafe, such as during heavy rain, congestion, poor visibility, accidents or roadworks.
The existing maximum speed limits will remain in force, and the initiative is not meant to encourage speeding. Instead, it aims to reduce lane hogging, prevent dangerous overtaking and keep traffic moving more smoothly.
