A kuih vendor at the popular Cecil Market in Penang was accused of acting cruelly towards a kitten which reportedly stole a piece of kuih from his stall to satiate its hunger.
Not long after the alleged incident went viral, outrage poured in from netizens who demanded stern action be taken against the vendor for his brutal act.
Penang vendor allegedly chokes kitten for stealing kuih
According to a post shared to the Facebook group Cat Free Adoption Penang, it wrote that the incident took place on May 8 at around 8am.
In the caption, it was alleged that the vendor choked a kitten which eyewitnesses said had stolen some kuih from him. In fact, it was so brutal that the feline defecated out of extreme fear.
Despite the assault, the kitten did not suffer any life-threatening injuries and is said to be under the care of another vendor after being rescued.
The post also claimed that this wasn’t the first time the vendor had acted cruelly towards animals and called upon Penangites to boycott the stall.
A police report was also lodged over the matter by an eyewitness.

A separate post provided an update on the matter, where the incident has since prompted a response from the Penang City Council (MBPP).
Since being given the case by the police, the MBPP has moved into action and captured a total of six cats from the market. But their fate still remains unknown.
As for the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS), it has been notified of the matter but did not say what actions will be taken.
Abuse of animals is punishable under Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772), where it carries a fine of between RM20,000 and RM100,000, a jail term of up to three years, or both if convicted.
